What is Buffering

🤔 It’s eating mindlessly while binge watching a show on Netflix. It’s gossiping about anything and everything at work. It’s spending 3 hours scrolling Instagram because you don’t want to go to bed or wake up in the morning to go to work. 

The brain works in mysterious ways. It wants to seek pleasure, avoid pain and be efficient. It cares about these three things most to avoid feeling negative emotions. Buffering is human nature’s way of giving into our urges to make us feel good by doing something that takes little to no effort.

A relatable example of buffering is reaching for that chocolate covered donut that’s been sitting on the counter at work all morning because you know it will make you happy for a moment between your crazy day full of meetings. 

The problem with buffering is that it actually makes us self sabotage and feel pain later when the sugar crash hits or when we are tired from staying up all night scrolling social media. Buffering actually makes us feel more stress and negative emotions in the long run. 

So how do you stop buffering aka wasting time aka self sabotaging? 

The trick is to actually BE in the NEGATIVE emotion and save the pleasure for later. Let yourself learn to feel negative emotions because they will ALWAYS be there. The steps to stop buffering are super simple. 

 Steps to Stop Buffering

  1. Know what your urges are
  2. Allow them to be there
  3. Don't respond.

Simple but not easy. 

The Importance of Sitting on Negative Emotions
